Besharam[4] is a 2013 Bollywood romantic action comedy film directed by Abhinav Kashyap.[5] The film features Ranbir Kapooropposite Pallavi Sharda who marks her return to the celluloid.[6] Filming for Besharam was scheduled to commence on December 10, 2012, with part of it taking place on a film set in Film City, Mumbai.[7] The film's tagline has been stated as "Na sammaan ka moh, na apmaan ka bhay", translated as "No yearning for respect, no fear of humiliation".[8] The film received mixed to negative reviews upon its release on 2 October 2013.[9] Besharam was declared Flop by Box Office India in just three days after its release.[10][11]

[hide]Plot synopsis
Babli (Ranbir Kapoor) is small-time car thief with that X factor- through which he manages to charm everyone in his sight.His mantra is "Na sammaan ka moh, na apmaan ka bhay" (No yearning for respect, no fear of humiliation). Babli falls head over heels for Tara (Pallavi Sharda) but he is clearly not her type. Eventually, she in turn, falls for him. Babli is being chased by Inspector Chulbul Chautala (Rishi Kapoor) and his wife, head Constable Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Kapoor). Tara wishes for Babli to change and be a good guy but that clearly doesn't come easy in Babli's life.[12]

Production
Movie Temple the production company of Sanjeev Gupta, Himanshu Mehra will release their movie Besharam on October 2, 2013. Film composer Lalit Pandit has confirmed that he has been asked to work on the film's soundtrack and that it will consist of six tracks.[13] Pandit also stated that the music was completed in the film's pre-production stages as per the instructions of director Kashyap.[13]
In January 2013 actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, parents of actor Ranbir Kapoor, were confirmed as starring in Besharam in unspecified roles.[14]
The movie was shot extensively in Carnation Auto, Chandigarh.
As on April 20, 2013, Ranbir Kapoor (Actor), Abhinav Kashyap (Director) and many in the unit were shooting at Universal Trade Tower, Sector-49, Sohna Road, Gurgaon (Haryana).[15] The trailer of the film will be launched by Ranbir Kapoor and Abhinav Kashyap at an orphanage in Mumbai on 2 August 2013.
The first trailer was released on 30 July 2013.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack of Besharam is composed by Lalit Pandit of the famous Jatin-Lalit duo and the lyrics are penned by Rajeev Barnwal, Nikhat Khan & Himanshu Kishan Mehra. The soundtrack, originally for a 14 August 2013 release, was released on 26 August 2013 via CD and MP3 sites. The song "Love Ki Ghanti" was released as a single track on MP3 sites in the beginning. Later, the official soundtrack of the film was released on the website of T-Series.[16]

Marketing
Besharam was promoted extensively on TV shows like Comedy Nights with Kapil, Kaun Banega Crorepati, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa,etc.[17][18] Ranbir and Pallavi also promoted the film in New York with Diwali Bash at Times Square and in London and Dubai.[19][20]
Release
Besharam released 3600 screens in India on October 2, 2013(Wednesday),[21][22] making it the biggest release in Hindi film history till date. Besharam beats Chennai Expresswhich had the biggest release ever for a Hindi film with 3500 screens in India and 700 plus screens abroad.[23][24][25][26][27] Utpal Acharya, Distribution Head of Reliance Entertainment said that they had planned for 4000 screens release for Besharam,but Pawan Kalyan's Telugu film Atharintiki Daaredi which released on September 27, 2013 got a phenomenal response in advance booking. That takes away some screens which they had planned in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala for Besharam.Besharam had a shooting budget of Rs.60 crore plus the cost of promotions, marketing and advertising of Rs 18 crore approx.[2][28]
Critical reception
Besharam received bad to average reviews from critics.[29][30] Madhureeta Mukherjee of Times of India rated it 3.5 of 5 stars and posited that the director "relies on the sheer 3K (read: Kapoors) power to entertain."[31] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave it 1.5 stars out of 5 and stated that the film proves the adage "All that glitters is not gold' absolutely right. The film is a huge disappointment".[32] Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave it 1.5 stars out of 5 and stated that "Besharam has too many shortcomings and lacks the ravishing junk delight of calamitous ending that commercial flicks usually generate".[33] Subhash K. Jha gave it 1 stars out of 5 and stated that "Besharam is entirely devoid of any rhythm, sur or taal. It’s shot like an ongoing television sitcom where the actors are clueless about which way the intended laughter would take them."[34][35]
Box office
Besharam opened to an excellent response on its opening day, recording 90-percent occupancies in theatres.[36] However, due to the negative reports, the film managed to collect
19.50 crore (US$3.0 million), falling short of the expected
25 crore (US$3.8 million) figure.[37] The film witnessed a huge drop of nearly 60-70-percent on its second day and had an epic crash on Thursday nett grossing
6.50 crore (US$990,000) only.[38][39] The film fell further 15-percent on Friday, grossing
5.75 crore (US$880,000).[40] The film collected
31.50 crore (US$4.8 million) over its weekend, which was a huge disappointment compared to the opening day collection[41], and was declared a "Flop" three days after release.[10] The film nett. grossed Rs 5.75 crore on Saturday.[42]
