Film Review: ‘Besharam’

“Besharam” means shameless, and Bollywood helmer Abhinav Kashyap never stops trumpeting that concept for a moment.  “More of the same” seems to be his mantra for this romantic comedy — more frenetically unmemorable musical numbers, more mugging, strutting and crass bits of business. Kashyap relies completely on star Ranbir Kapoor to put over this relentless reiteration of cliches and, admittedly, the actor invests his aggressively tasteless, crotch-grabbing antics with enough energy and humor to make it palatable, but only just. Hugely anticipated, “Besharam” appears too ho-hum to maintain the inflated box office of its worldwide Oct. 2 bow on 4,300 screens worldwide.

Babli (Kapoor) fixes cars by day and steals them at night, funneling his ill-gotten gains back into the orphanage where he grew up alongside sidekick T-2 (Amitosh Nagpal). The oddest thing about "Besharam," in a litany of incredibly perplexing elements, is how cheap and small it seems. One of the first scenes in the film sees the sinister gangster villain (Javed Jaffrey) and henchmen being pulled over by the police, in a stolen car with a very large bag of money in the trunk. One of the henchmen produces a rocket launcher, as one does, and blows up a cop car. This is nothing out of the ordinary—what are rocket launchers for if not blowing up cop cars in the first reel?—but the resultant explosion is a dismayingly cheap-looking, seemingly computer-generated fireball.

Music is another big drawback in this never engaging flick. Lalit Pandit music isn’t enjoyable.

I’ll go with one and a half star for Besharam. The flick doesn’t even stands to its title. It should have entertained us blatantly.

Pallavi Sharda implied too much energy on dancing and uttering her dialogues but just ended up with a descent work in place of good.

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh try to amuse you with their ‘mard’ debate, corruption and bribe topics but sometimes irritate you.

Jaaved Jafferi, who isn’t portrayed by Kashyap as a big tormentor, is good in whatever limited scenes he gets in.

The taunting between them, which was supposed to be cute enough also seems forced. While their humour isn’t slapstick, the action which occupies least duration isn’t hardcore, one thing which could have been dealt with easily by Kashyap.

He doesn’t give much combative sequels to Ranbir, in fact instills Rishi Kapoor with Sunny Deol zeal.Coming till here, at last we were compelled to make a guess that what made Ranbir chose this flick. However, the actor tried hard to paint the blemishes by filling the scenes with his electrifying performance but his magic didn’t work this time.

Such is the momentum carried in 2 hr 20 minutes time, which nowhere thrills you or amuses you. The narration is so draggy that the boredom takes a toll after a while especially in the first half. But expecting something magical in the second half would be nothing but a betrayal.Though the second half kicks off on a good note when Ranbir teases Pallavi while they are on their way to Chandigarh but soon all your hopes  vanish, when unnecessary melodrama and uninvited songs ventures in.

Abhinav not only skips the chance to develop that chemistry between them but also fails to give a funny yet endearing appeal with Bulbul Chautala (Neetu Singh) and inspector Chulbul Chautala (Rishi Kapoor).

Bubly unknowingly robs Tara's car ( the girl he loves) and sells it to Chandal (Jaaved Jafferi), who is a king of money laundering in Chandigarh. But when he realizes that the car belongs to Tara, Bubly reaches Punjab to take it back from the bad man. But will he be able to bring it back. That’s how the story deals further.

Unfortunately, along with the non-inventive tale of this flick the necessary rudiments like dialogues and screenplay fall flat and get no moment to balance itself.

His action sombered and one-liners tickled the funny bone. Despite the numerous loopholes in the screenplay he enjoyed the cinematic liberty and served the purpose of entertainment, which undeniably was a winner.

But that zeal and energy was not maintained in ‘Besharam’. Here we have Bubly (Ranbir Kapoor) who is an orphan and his profession is to steal cars. He sells them, and utilises the amount in his orphanage where he was brought up. But while stealing cars he falls in love with Tara Sharma (Pallavi Sharda). He shamelessly follows her and flirts with her.

Action-comedy-drama is one of the popular genres in Indian cinema today, if served with equal responsibility. Abhinav Singh Kashyap who did a block buster directorial debut with Dabangg gave a new dimension to the masala flicks with regional touch.
